A work permit is an official document that allows certain immigrants to work legally in the United States. The work permit is typically tied to a immigration process that has already been initiated. For example, a person with a pending asylum application is entitled to a work permit. Similarly, individuals who are applying for cancellation of removal or adjustment of status can request a work permit while the process is ongoing. What is not allowed is to have been in the U.S. without authorization, without any ongoing immigration proceedings, and then apply for a work permit.
The application for a Work Permit with the immigration office may require a fee of $410.00. However, there are some exceptions to this fee, or it may already be included in other applications.
If you already have a valid work permit, you should renew it 180 days before it expires. Failing to do so and allowing the permit to expire could result in working without authorization and potential legal consequences.
